SEO mistakes you should avoid

The nature of SEO is that it’s rapidly evolving and changing continuously. The best way to keep a handle on things is to continuously keep learning about new trends, and changes in Google’s algorithm and trying new tactics to gain traction. Quintessentially, to become a successful SEO expert, you need to nurture a spirit of ongoing curiosity combined with a questioning mindset that always asks, compares, analyses, tests and evaluates results. The biggest problem with any discipline is when you think there is nothing you can do to improve it and it just becomes part of a daily routine with no sharp bends or surprises.

Avoid becoming complacent and smug thinking that there’s nothing that can surprise you when undertaking SEO. The inconvenient truth about SEO is that many digital marketers are still relying on many robotic tasks day in and day out that are simply being ruled out as SEO taboos by Google. Remember that your primary objective should always be to create more valuable and original content, not higher rankings because ultimately, you should be optimizing for people and not for websites. We have researched some SEO practices that you should stop implementing right now.

SEO mistakes you should avoid

  1. Don’t forget the ALT Tag
    A picture is just an image file if it is not optimized for a keyword. To optimize it, use the ALT tag when inserting your image in a post to see improved results. Also, don’t forget to give the file name a keyword that specifically describes what the image is all about.
  2. Not doing SEO correctly
    When doing link building, avoid creating links that direct readers only to the home page of your site. Your links should also be directed to your top and most popular posts as well.
  3. Keyword overload
    This is a common practice which is not only unethical but is also strongly penalised by search engines which affects your rankings. If you are looking to rank for a variety of keywords, it is a good idea to create a separate page for each keyword and optimize for it accordingly. The focus should be on the creation of useful pages that include your keywords which form part of the content.
  4. Chasing Pagerank
    This is not the only metric that should have your undivided attention. Rather focus on your analytics, ROI and relevancy as recommended by Google. Pagerank is also just one of two hundred indicators used to crawl and rank a website.
  5. Duplicate Content
    Don’t make the mistake of developing content that revolves around similar themes or ideas which use identical keywords. Think about original topics that you can write about and include unique keywords that are competitive and highly searched.
  6. Buying Links
    Paid links are sometimes flagged by Google’s search engine experts. If you are acquiring masses of links, Google will probably pick up on the irregular linking activity from sites that have completely unrelated content to yours which also seems suspicious. It is recommended to rather build your links up manually which will still contribute towards steady site growth.
  7. Healthy Balance of Graphics and Content
    Don’t become so obsessed with the design of your site that you’re sacrificing the quality of your content. Too many images will overcrowd your page and slow it down. This also affects at what speed the bots index your pages.
